I just found out that November 17th is Prematurity Day, did you know that? We are encouraging the community to learn about MedImmune/RSV Awareness & World Prematurity Day Campaign and presenting some tips to help you the parent to take care of your tiny gift- your baby.

Acabo de enterarme que el 17 de noviembre es el día de la prematuridad, ¿lo sabías? Estamos alentando a la comunidad para aprender acerca de MedImmune/RSV conciencia & prematuro campaña del día mundial y presentando algunos consejos para ayudarle a los padres a cuidar de tu pequeño regalo - su bebé.

 A baby is always a blessing and a joy in our family. There is much excitement when a child is born and all our darling babies are always welcome by my big family. My sister was having her third child. We always teased my dad with having his very own football team with all the grandsons he has been blessed with. This particular baby was no exception only it seems he was just as excited as we were and he came a couple months before he was expected. We were happy the birth went well but that is when all the complications begins and as a parent and family members, we were concerned and had to do some research to find out what are the disadvantage of delivering prematurely and the potential consequences of preterm birth for  our newly born child.   


Un bebé siempre es una bendición y una alegría en nuestra familia. Hay mucho entusiasmo cuando un niño nace y todos nuestros bebés queridos siempre son bienvenidos por mi familia grande. Mi hermanita iba tener su tercer hijo. Siempre embromábamos a mi papá con tener su muy propio equipo de fútbol con todos los nietos con los cuales se ha sido bendicido.  Este bebé en particular no era ninguna excepción sólo parece que se excitó tanto como nosotros y vino una par de meses antes de que lo esperaban. Éramos felices que el nacimiento fue bien pero esto es cuando todas las complicaciones comienzan y como un padre y miembros de familia, nos preocupamos y tuvimos que hacer un poco de investigación para averiguar que es la desventaja de la entrega prematuramente y las consecuencias potenciales del nacimiento del pretérmino para su bebé recién nacido.

 
We certainly did not expect to spend many sleepless and tiresome nights wondering and praying that all will work out well after the first 72 hours after birth in the hospital. It is not easy for my sister with 2 full term children. Here you can see the love of a mother for her children when she is on her hospital bed awaiting the arrival of her child. I have several siblings in the medical field and they all agree that prevention is better than cure and advised us to be updated with information to prevent any type of infection or disease. We sure did not expect all the heartaches that we overcame with love of the family and wonderful doctors and nurses that cared for the mom and child.

Ciertamente no esperábamos pasar muchas noches sin dormir y tediosos pensando y rezando para que todo funcionará bien después de las primeras 72 horas después del nacimiento en el hospital. No fue fácil para mi hermanita con 2 niños de término completo. Aquí pudiste ver el amor de una madre para sus hijos cuando está en su cama de hospital esperando la llegada de su hijo. Tengo varios hermanitos en el campo médico y todos ellos estaban de acuerdo que la prevención es mejor que la cura y nos aconsejeron que actualizáramos con la información para prevenir cualquier tipo de infección o enfermedad. Seguro no esperabamos todas las angustias que vencimos con el amor de la familia y maravillosos doctores y enfermeras que ayudaron cariñosamente a la mamá y niño.

Firstly, let me share with you "What is RSV?"
RSV is a common, seasonal virus contracted by nearly 100 percent of infants by the age of 2. RSV occurs in epidemics, typically from November through March in most of the U.S., but the “RSV season” can vary by geography and from year to year.

En primer lugar, permítanme compartir con ustedes "¿Qué es RSV?"
RSV es un virus común de temporada contratado por casi 100 por ciento de los recién nacidos a la edad de 2. RSV ocurre en epidemias, típicamente desde noviembre hasta marzo en la mayoría de los Estados Unidos, pero la "temporada de RSV" puede variar por la geografía y de año en año.

 

Did you know that for premature babies this virus can lead to a mild respiratory infection with symptoms similar to the common cold or flu, but in some it can develop into a much more serious infection. In fact, severe RSV disease: 

•  Is the leading cause of hospitalization for babies during their first year of life in the United States
•  Causes approximately 125,000 hospitalizations and up to 400 infant deaths each year in the United States
•  Results in up to 10 times as many infant deaths each year than the flu
•  Is responsible for one of every 13 pediatrician visits and one of every 38 trips to the ER in children under the age of five

¿Sabía usted que en el caso de bebés prematuros este virus puede conducir a una leve infección respiratoria con síntomas similares a los del resfriado común o la gripe, pero en algunos se puede desarrollar en una infección más seria. De hecho, enfermedad grave de RSV:

•  Es la principal causa de hospitalización en los bebés durante su primer año de vida en los Estados Unidos
• Causa aproximadamente 125,000 hospitalizaciones y hasta 400 muertes de bebés cada año en los Estados Unidos
• Los resultados en un máximo de 10 veces más muertes infantiles cada año de la gripe
• Es el responsable de uno de cada 13 visitas pediátricas y uno de cada 38 viajes a la sala de urgencias en los niños menores de cinco años

Here are some symptoms of severe RSV disease that as a parent we should not ignore but pay attention to our child's health.

•  Coughing or wheezing that does not stop
•  Fast or troubled breathing
•  Spread-out nostrils and/or a caved-in chest when trying to breathe
•  Bluish color around the mouth or fingernails
•  Fever (especially if it is over 100.4°F (rectal) in infants under 3 months of age)

Aquí están algunos de los síntomas de enfermedad grave de RSV que como padres no debemos ignorar pero presta atención a la salud de nuestros hijos.

• Tos o sibilancias que no se detiene
• Rápido o respiración agitada
• De fosas nasales y/o una hundida en el pecho cuando se trata de respirar
• Color azulado alrededor de la boca o las uñas
• Fiebre (especialmente si es mayor de 100.4 °F (rectal) en los bebés menores de 3 meses de edad)

One of the most important question is "Can RSV be prevented?"

There is currently no treatment for RSV infection, so prevention is critical. Be aware that all parents,  especially parents with high-risk babies  needs to follow these prevention methods to help protect their children from contracting RSV.

• The children were always alert and reminded each other to Wash their hands
• The children always helped by keeping toys, clothes, blankets, and sheets clean
• My sister asked the BIG family to stay away to prevent any interaction and the nurses visited the home and we were able to avoid crowds and being around anyone who may be sick during RSV season
• The pediatrician were always ready to answer any questions my sister had. You as a parent should ask your child’s pediatrician if he or she may be at high-risk and ways you can protect a high-risk lab 

 Uno de la pregunta más importante es "Se puede prevenir el RSV?" 
Actualmente no existe tratamiento para la infección por el RSV, así que la prevención es fundamental. Tenga en cuenta que todos los padres, especialmente los padres con bebés de alto riesgo debe seguir estos métodos de prevención para ayudar a proteger a sus hijos contraigan RSV.

• Los niños estaban siempre alerta y recordando mutuamente a lavarse las manos

• El pediatra siempre estaban dispuestos a responder a cualquier pregunta mi hermanita tenía. Como padre de familia pide a la pediatra de su niño si él o ella puede estar en alto riesgo y las maneras que usted puede proteger a un laboratorio de alto riesgo
