Let's make a difference in our Teen's Life @AllState #VamosConCuidado

Disclosure:I wrote this post as part of my participation in a blog tour for Latina Mom Bloggers on behalf of the Allstate Foundation and received compensation to thank me for taking the time to participate. However, all opinions expressed are my own.

It is amazing how time goes by so rapidly when we have children. It felt like yesterday that there was a baby being born and today we are preparing for the day she will learn to drive. As a mother who has been in a life threatening accident, I am cautious but not obsessive and have been preparing my children in following the rules of driving and arriving safely to their chosen destination. They are very supportive and I am reminded of the rules of driving and speeding. How interesting that I foresee the need to learn more about this phase of my child's life.

A week ago, there was a teleconference with Jorge Monsivais, our national Hispanic community spokesperson who is a Latino Allstate agent and is also a parent of a teen driver. It was really awesome that Jorge shared invaluable information with us as parents. I am amazed at the amount of information that is available on the Allstate website.

It is very enlightening to learn that “¡Vamos!” or “Let’s Go!” in English, is the first-ever national survey looking into the attitudes and behaviors of Hispanic teen drivers and parents. The Allstate Foundation conducted the survey to identify tools and tips to help all parents keep their teens safer when driving.

Es muy informativo saber que esto “¡Vamos! ” o “¡Let’s Go!

There is one statement that Jorge Monsivais said that I agree with 100% which is "Parents are role models" as I see it everyday. I see this daily as my children gets into the car and they automatically put on their seat belt. I see it as well, when we are traveling overseas. Others traveling with us may not put on their seat belt but the children advise them it would be safer if they do put it on. Children repeat the same advice given to them.

I am one of the those seven out of 10 Hispanic parents who were unaware that car crashes are the leading cause of death among teens. Did you know that most Hispanic parents, 42 percent, assumed drugs and alcohol were the No. 1 cause of teen deaths?

Allstate provided several tips, one of them is the Teen Driving Coaching tip which is guiding teens before and up to one year of receiving his/her license. The most dangerous year in a teen's life is considered the first year of driving therefore, parents are advised to drive daily or at least 30 minutes per day with their teen.

The resources provided a great tip which is a Parent-Teen Agreement whereby the parents provide guidance in practicing good driving technique: no talking on the cellphone nor having interaction with fellow teenagers in the car while driving. Parents spending time with teens motivates great communication to use mutually agreed-upon rules of the road and the consequences of broken rules.

One of these resources that I totally encourage is for parents and teens to look at the Graduated Driver Licensing Video which is used to slowly expose teens to the driving experience and phase them into full driving privileges. Since laws vary by state, the licensing process can be confusing for parents and teens. The Allstate Foundation created videos to help make it easier to understand in a visual, fun way.

There are many more information based on the survey that the Foundation conducted and parents are encouraged to use the resources wisely which is available in both English and Spanish on the Allstate Foundation website to help their teens to drive safely.

  1. I agree we need to be role models for our kids. I am putting the cell phone in the glove compartment now when I get in the car...out of reach so there is no temptation. It's just not worth the risk. I'll have one driving next month and I have to say, I am nervous.
